Story overview

Doctor Tenma chooses to save a boy instead of a politically important patient, losing his professional standing in the process. The consequences of that decision become far more disturbing than a workplace dispute. The story's central tension is ethical as well as investigative: it asks how a commitment to saving lives survives contact with what follows.

Background

Monster won the Grand Prize at the third Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 1999, as well as the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category in 2000.

The series was published in English by VIZ Media under its VIZ Signature imprint from February 21, 2006, to December 16, 2008, and again in 2-in-1 omnibuses under the subtitle The Perfect Edition. The manga was also published in Brazilian Portuguese by Panini Comics from June 2012 to April 2015; in Polish by Hanami from March 28, 2014, to February 1, 2017; in Spain by Planeta Cómic from June 16, 2009, to September 21, 2010; in Argentina by Editorial Ivrea and LARP Editores; and in Turkey by Marmara Çizgi.

This manga explores the question: Is evil born or made?
And dare I say it explores it in a lot of eerie depth, and we, as readers, never are quiet able to decide the answer.
All the characters are very well written, and none of them can be characterised as good or evil completely-- they are layered and have intriguing back stories that slowly tie into the climax and conclusion.
But the most interesting of the characters is Johan himself. The guy is unrepentantly evil, with he still can't be fit in the box of a sociopath, as there ARE people he cares about-- namely, his sister. ...

Mixed Feelings
In which evil is invisible until evil becomes human; a pulpy mystery with unblooming philosophical trappings.

Stuck between its divine visual flow and aggrandizing mythos of morality, humanizing vignettes succumb to lofty narrative ambitions. I'm more impressed by Urasawa's mechanical artistry and sporadic characterizations, making the setting feel alive and textured, than the main two anchors. The wealth of characters, which would usually be a distraction, ironically becomes its only saving grace once you realise how uninteresting the main strife is. Everything after the first volume is shallow intrigue building on its Byzantine plotting until it all eventually leads to a pristine moral victory for the ...

Monster ended up being a manga that ultimately wore out its welcome fairly quickly, with many elements surrounding its core narrative, characters and themes feeling glossed over and unintriguing. While the base question it poses in its premise does lead for some food for thought, it leaves those crumbs uneaten, forcing them to rot away from prying eyes. By the end, Monster becomes a vague mish-mash of ideas and concepts of characters, to the point where the entirety of the story becomes a uncertain mess.

There is no room for the characters to truly show their potential. Instead, they are chained to a track, perpetuating forever ...
