Story overview

Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wenli rise on opposite sides of a long interstellar war. Their military decisions are tied to competing ideas about government, loyalty and the limits of power. Rather than following battles alone, keep the political institutions in view; victories and defeats repeatedly change the conditions under which each leader can act.

Background

Legend of the Galactic Heroes was adapted from a series of ten novels, published 1982–87, by Yoshiki Tanaka. The novels won the Seiun Award for the best long-form Japanese science fiction in 1988.

At the start of its production the anime was distributed through a subscription system in which episodes were mailed to existing fans of the novels. It was made in four separate tranches over nearly a decade, with the production of side-stories continuing for several further years. The main series has the largest voice cast of any anime, with well over 300 voice actors, and it is the longest OVA series ever made.

The novels have also been adapted into a manga, a stage musical by the Takarazuka Revue and a number of games.

I've seen hundreds of anime, some of them I haven't even put them on MAL, but I can 100% without a single doubt say that Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is not only the greatest anime of all time, but the greatest piece of fiction I have ever seen. I have read books, seen movies, TV shows, cartoons, and other types of media, but there is nothing like this out there, I don't want to go too in depth with this as anything I would say about the plot would ruin the watch, but the characters (especially Yang Wen Li) are beautifully written, the music, the animation, ...

Mixed Feelings
This show is undoubtedly a masterpiece in its own way, its rich in character building, world building, plot, and so much more, there's quite a lot going on here, and its honestly on a whole different scale then many other shows avant grande style, buuttt, it has somewhat of a unique problem in that it starts off really strong, but degenerates into just plot. Like by episode 80 and especially 90 the show is such a drag, its just plot battles and plot intrigue and the animators appear to not know how to create suspense and tension any more, and it ends out as super ...

I have never written a review, but this anime just blew me away so much, I think it's finally time.

This review was slightly revised on July 28th, 2024 to be a little more coherent. The original review was posted on June 15th, 2021.

TL;DR It was bad.

It was in fact so bad, it almost cured my crippling anime addiction.

I, like many others, was drawn to this anime due to its high rating, and equally high praise. I was in the mood for something a bit more serious, with clever writing, smart characters, political intrigues, and conspiracies. I was disappointed in every aspect.

Obligatory "no, it did not ...

Top 13 Best Military/War Anime of All Time

Unsurprisingly, many of the more 'epic' anime out there feature fictional military organisations, but so do some lighthearted comedies. This list has a little something for everyone.
